Secure retail: the key to a differentiated consumer experience

Alejandro Angeletti, regional director of video security for South America at Motorola Solutions, analyzes how technology is strengthening security in retail. Solutions such as video security with AI, smart sensors and cloud systems can reduce losses, optimize operations and create safer and more efficient purchasing environments.

In the fast-paced world of retail, security and technology are the foundation of profitability and, in turn, a unique shopping experience. Imagine a scenario where every person, product and establishment is safer thanks to integrated technologies. This is made possible by implementing advanced solutions: from digital radios that connect equipment in real time, to fixed and body cameras that capture critical details, smart sensors that anticipate problems, and biometric access control systems that streamline processes while eliminating physical credentials.

The use of these technologies and solutions among retailers provides optimized operations, increasing profit margins, as well as peace of mind for the business due to the drastic reduction of losses due to theft and inventory problems, which in the United States alone exceed $110 billion dollars annually. Furthermore, the use of these technologies is directly reflected in consumer confidence. For example, in Latin America, concern is palpable: 71% of consumers fear theft, and 77% anticipate a price increase due to insecurity. Security (both physical and electronic) thus becomes an added value that the customer perceives and appreciates to a great extent.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and video analytics are rewriting the rules of the game in this industry. Images and videos are transformed into actionable data, allowing the detection of behavioral patterns such as interaction on shelves, analysis of conversion zones, queue abandonment or waiting time for customer service areas, which not only improve operations and optimize the shopping experience, but also proactively drive sales. AI-powered security cameras act as tireless and ever-alert guardians, protecting employees and customers, preventing theft, and offering valuable support of clear evidence in the event of claims. With intelligent monitoring, losses are reduced, creating more open, comfortable and safe spaces that invite consumers to enjoy their purchases and strengthen store loyalty.

According to recent estimates, in 2029, Mexico will be among the six countries worldwide with a consistent participation of electronic commerce (e-commerce) in retail commerce. And online retail sales in Latin America will maintain growth of 12.2% in 2025, a rate 1.5 times higher than the global average. The report attributes this performance to a combination of factors, including consumers' increasing digital maturity and the use of new technologies. Consequently, technology adoption in retail is being interestingly driven by cloud-managed security solutions because they offer fast and low-cost implementation, eliminating the need for local servers and the associated maintenance expenses.

Remote configuration not only reduces the initial investment, but also frees up the IT team to provide business areas with relevant information and data beyond basic protection. Devices such as mobile video, smart sensors and customizable dashboards enable the visualization of crucial data in real time, facilitating instant operational decisions.

Let's consider a concrete example: in a department store, AI-trained cameras no longer just record; They analyze gestures and movement sequences to detect purchase intention, but also suspicious behavior: theft or fraud that the human eye could miss. In just seconds, after identifying anomalous patterns of movement and location such as loitering, camera evasion, price tag switching or even organized retail crime, the cameras automatically alert security personnel through their control panel. The operator can observe the event live or review the recording, taking preventive measures such as discreetly approaching the person, sending a guard by radio or activating alarm protocols. The certainty that everything is recorded for review and can be used as valid legal evidence is an incalculable benefit. This solution allows immediate action, deterring theft and increasing security without physical interventions that could inconvenience other customers.

The integration of security technology in the retail sector is not just another option, but a necessity and complement to other areas within the company. The real question is not whether technology and data will transform industry dynamics, but how long companies can continue to operate without proper, strategic implementation.
