Mother's Day Balance: Cell phones and kitchen appliances dominated sales

GfK (NielsenIQ) presented sales results in the retail market during the week of Mother's Day 2024, revealing key trends in the consumption of technology and household appliances in Argentina.

This year, 82% of technology and appliance sales in the retail market were concentrated in ten products. Cell phones led as the best-selling product, representing 30% of total sales, consolidating themselves as the star category of the event.

Categories with the greatest growth in the week of the 2024 event

Compared to the previous week of this year, Consumer preferences leaned mostly toward kitchen appliances. However, technological products such as speakers, cell phones and tablets also entered the Top 10 with the highest growth, highlighting the relevance of technology in the purchasing decisions of Argentine consumers.

“These results allow us to understand how consumers adapt their purchasing decisions in key events and how technological categories continue to occupy an important place in their preferences”, he commented Daniela Martínez, Head CSM Tech and Durables at GfK Argentina.

Performance compared to 2023

Despite the popularity of certain categories, Total sales volume in units reflected a 27% contraction compared to Mother's Day 2023, maintaining a trend in line with the accumulated variation from January to September 2024 (-25%). However, six of the top ten categories showed a smaller decline than the market average. While cell phones managed to reduce their rate of contraction, with a drop of 29% during the event, in contrast to the -44% observed in the January-September period of this year.
