At IFA, LG Electronics (LG) is introducing the world's first 8K OLED TV (model 88Z9) and its NanoCell LG 8K TV (model 75SM99), which will be available this month in Australia, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the United States. As an emerging leader in 8K technology, LG's 8K TVs exceed resolution measurement criteria set by the Information Display Measurement Standard (IDMS), established by the International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM). The resolution of a display depends not only on meeting or exceeding a specific number of pixels, but also on whether those pixels can be adequately distinguished from each other to convey the stated resolution.
The ICDM defined the Contrast Modulation (CM) measurement, which accurately and quantitatively describes how distinguishable pixels are from each other. For any TV display to deliver the resolution indicated by its pixel count, the ICDM requires that the minimum CM value exceed a threshold of 25% for images and 50% for text. An 8K TV with a CM value that is lower than these required thresholds does not offer true 8K, even though the TV may have a sufficient number (7,680 x 4,320) of pixels. Testing based on these universal reference industry standards resulted in LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K and LG 8K NanoCell TVs achieving CM values in the range of 90%, ensuring viewers experience all the extra details in 8K content when viewed on their LG 8K TVs.
LG 8K TVs feature luxurious details and vibrant, lifelike colors, which are a testament to LG's unrivaled display technology. As the world's first 8K OLED TV, not to mention also LG's largest OLED TV to date, the 88″ LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K TV (model 88Z9), offers 8K Ultra HD resolution (7,680 x 4,320) with 33 million self-emitted pixels, equivalent to 16 times the number of pixels in a Full HD TV and four times that of a UHD TV. Winner of this year's IF Design Award and Red Dot Award, LG SIGNATURE OLED 8K features a sophisticated, minimalist design, featuring a brushed aluminum stand, and comes with an integrated 80W speaker system for powerful sound.
On the other hand, the 75″ NanoCell 8K TV offers a total immersion experience thanks to an 8K image with impressive colors, contrast and details. LG's Nano Display technology generates incredibly sharp, large-scale images. Nano Color filters out impurities to improve color reproduction and Nano Black – advanced Full Array Local Dimming Pro technology optimized for 8K – precisely controls the TV's backlighting, for deeper blacks and greater contrast.
Both TVs feature 8K upscaling and enhanced noise reduction, improved from four to six stops. The result is a perfect 8K image, upconverting native 4K (3,840 x 2,160) or Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) content. This world-class performance is enhanced by LG's second-generation α (Alpha) 9 Gen 2 8K intelligent processor. LG's advanced chip elevates image and sound quality using deep learning technology and access to an extensive database, allowing it to recognize the quality of the source and optimize any type of content. The α9 Gen 2 8K also analyzes environmental conditions to achieve the perfect level of screen brightness every time.
Rich, resonant audio complements the televisions' stellar visual output to further enhance viewer immersion. An intelligent algorithm can mix two-channel audio with virtual 5.1 surround sound, providing a three-dimensional soundscape that brings movies, music and sporting events to life. The TVs also support WiSA, for wireless home theater with uncompressed 16-bit audio in up to 5.1 channels; An exceptional way to experience the dynamic, crisp sound of Dolby Atmos.
To ensure memorable cinematic viewing sessions, LG 8K OLED TV and 8K NanoCell TV feature Cinema HDR, which encompasses support for Dolby Vision and Technicolor's Advanced HDR up to 4K and HLG and HDR 10 up to 8K.
LG also future-proofed its 8K TVs by providing four ports that support HDMI 2.1 specifications, which will allow viewers to enjoy 8K content at 60 frames per second. LG 8K TVs also support Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and Enhanced Audio Return Channel (EARC).
For added convenience, the 88Z9 and 75SM99 models will be compatible with Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, and will be available in more than 140 markets
In select markets, these TVs offer built-in versions of Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, providing easy voice control of the TV and connected smart devices and making it easier for users to get the information they want.
“The new 8K TVs show that LG is deeply committed to providing consumers with true 8K as defined by established display industry standards,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG's home entertainment and mobile communications companies. “LG 8K OLED and NanoCell TVs are not only TVs with more pixels, but they also offer all of our latest display technologies.”
