Globally, smartphones seem to be returning from a recessionary cycle motivated by various factors, all within the framework of a very complicated global economic context. Data from global consulting firms predict a 2024 that would bring improvements and growth in the market.

Globally, Apple reached the summit of the smartphone market in 2023, a market that continues to face challenges, although it is moving rapidly towards recovery. According to preliminary data from International Data Corporation (IDC)'s Worldwide Quarterly MobilePhone Tracker, global smartphone shipments in 2023 fell 3.2% year-over-year to 1.17 billion units. Although it is the lowest annual volume in a decade, due to macroeconomic challenges and high inventories at the beginning of the year, growth in the second half consolidated the expected recovery for 2024. The fourth quarter of 2023 recorded year-on-year growth of 8.5% and 326.1 million shipments, higher than the 7.3% expected growth.

“While we saw strong growth from low-end Android players like Transsion and Xiaomi in the second half of 2023, stemming from rapid growth in emerging markets, the biggest winner is clearly Apple,” said Nabila Popal, research director of IDC's Worldwide Tracker. "Apple is not only the only player in the Top 3 to show positive growth annually, it also holds the number one spot annually for the first time. All of this despite facing increased regulatory challenges and renewed competition from Huawei in China. Apple's success and resilience is largely due to the growing trend of premium devices, which now account for more than 20% of the market."
